Mission & History

Mission Statement:

To increase participation of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islanders (AANHPIs) in government and the democratic process through its leadership development programs.

History:

The Institute was founded in 2006 by former Assemblymember Judy Chu, chair of the California Asian Pacific Islander Legislative Caucus to build the leadership pipeline of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander in the California State Legislature. Under the leadership of Maeley Tom as founding board president and Georgette Imura as vice president, the Institute launched its inaugural Capitol Academy program to identify and train the best and brightest local AANHPI elected officials for higher office.
